New! We are excited to offer these custom, unbleached facial silk sponges. With a gorgeous chocolatey hue, these are exactly the same as our premium Caribbean silk sponges, but even more natural and sustainable.
ABOUT SILK SPONGES
Facial sea sponges help cleanse, rejuvenate, and contain natural minerals which are beneficial for the skin, and are absolutely perfect for gently exfoliating and pampering the skin on a daily basis. Silk sponges are the most luxurious sponges for facial care ~ they are the softest, densest, and have the finest pores of any sponge, and they don't irritate, pull, or tear the skin like a washcloth, luffa, and other materials can.
Perfect for gently cleansing, exfoliating, and pampering skin on a daily basis. These sea sponges from the Caribbean are very soft, but have more texture and are more exfoliating than our silk sponges from the Philippines. They are also more durable than silk sponges from the Philippines. Suitable for all skin types, including those with sensitive and mature skin types.
SUSTAINABILITY
Responsibly harvested and a naturally renewable resource, these sponges are hand-cut by divers to ensure that enough of the base remains intact so that the sponge can regrow. Studies show that areas harvested actually increase the population density of sponges. Sponges are biodegradable, and can be added to the compost once they've reached the end of their life-cycle.
DIMENSIONS & SPECS
Our Caribbean silk sea sponges are Premium (whole and uncut, in their original form), and measure approximately 2.5-3" in length. Silk sponges form naturally (not by machines!) and as a result, their shapes and sizes are unique and irregular.
Premium sponges are whole sponges left intact (the only cut is on the bottom where it was harvested from its base so that the sponge can regrow). They may have been shaped and cut slightly by divers, but are still in their original, natural form. These sponges are superior in quality when compared to cut versions, and are overall more durable. If you're looking for the highest quality option available, then premium, whole sponges are the best choice.
Listing is for one Caribbean sea sponge (unless otherwise denoted).
ABOUT UNBLEACHED VS BLEACHED SPONGES
After being harvested from the ocean, sea sponges are traditionally bleached to a blonde or golden color for commercial reasons. However, the natural color of sponges is absolutely stunning ~ a beautiful array of tan and brown shades. Not only does bleaching alter the color of sponges, but it also impacts their quality since the sponge's delicate fibers and structure is weakened by the bleach. As a result, unbleached sponges are stronger, more durable, and (in our opinion) naturally more beautiful!
Since sponges are traditionally bleached for cosmetic reasons, we've custom ordered these gorgeous unbleached sponges directly from the harvesters, making them extra-special and something that you don't usually see. After harvest, these sponges are carefully set aside from the rest, circumventing normal processing methods. So, although it seems counterintuitive, unbleached sponges are actually more expensive since they have to be carefully processed differently from the majority being sold. But, when we found out that we could custom order these sponges, we were so excited to work with the harvesters in order to offer these to you!
HOW TO USE
How to use: saturate thoroughly with cold water, and lightly apply using circular motions. If desired, add a small amount of facial wash. After using, rinse out the sponge completely with cold water, squeezing all excess water out (do not wring or twist as that can damage and break the fibers), and allow to air dry naturally.
*Sponges are traditionally measured when wet.
Note: there may be sand, small pebbles, or small pieces of seaweed in your sponge when you receive it due to the natural manner of this product. If you do, simply saturate with water and rinse them out.
Silk sponge care: Every few weeks, cleanse and disinfect by soaking in one of these solutions for two hours: 10% white vinegar with water, or 5% hydrogen peroxide with water for two hours. then rinse completely and air dry. Do not twist or pull the sponge, as this may damage the fibers and tear it. After each use, allow sponge to dry completely. With proper care, silk sponges can last for quite some time. Dermatologists recommend replacing sponges after 3-4 weeks.
