Published June 2024 ~ Updated June 2026
If you've landed on this page, you've already decided that a natural sea sponge is the right choice for your bath routine. But with so many options in our shop, I know it can feel a little overwhelming to choose. Grass or wool? Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico? Bleached or unbleached? Cut or whole?
The honest answer is that there's no wrong choice here. Every sponge we carry has been personally tested and selected, and all of them are genuinely good. But they do have meaningful differences ~ in texture, durability, color, and price ~ and the right one for you depends on what you're looking for.
Here's the full breakdown.
Summary: We carry several types of natural bath sea sponges, ranging from our most affordable cut Caribbean grass sponges starting at $8.50, to premium whole-form Gulf of Mexico sponges, ultra-soft deep-sea wool sponges, unbleached "chocolate" versions of most styles, and sustainably grown luffas for a plant-based option. If you want our honest recommendation: Gulf of Mexico sponges and wool sponges are our top picks for durability and quality. Read on for the full guide to each type.
What Are the Main Differences Between Sea Sponge Types?
Before diving into individual products, it helps to understand the three main variables that distinguish one sponge from another:
Cut vs. whole form. Cut sponges have been trimmed into their shape and size. They're more affordable, but less durable than whole-form sponges because cutting removes some of the natural fiber density. Whole-form sponges are harvested with their natural shape intact ~ they're denser, last longer, and have a more sculptural, beautiful appearance.
Bleached vs. unbleached. Most sea sponges are bleached to achieve the familiar pale golden color. Bleaching is a traditional practice for sponges, which is why you'll usually only see yellow-ish colored sponges. Bleaching lightens the sponge but can reduce some of its natural durability over time. Unbleached sponges retain their natural chocolate-brown color and are more durable and environmentally friendly ~ they're as close to the sponge's natural state as possible. We custom order our unbleached sponges directly from our sponge harvester - they're not usually sold commercially - which is why you likely won't see them anywhere else!
Origin. Where a sponge is harvested affects its texture, density, and quality. Our Caribbean sponges are wonderful all-purpose sponges. Our Gulf of Mexico sponges are denser, more durable, and a step up in overall quality. Our deep-sea wool sponges come from deep ocean depths, which produces a distinctly softer, denser fiber.
With those differences in mind, here's every sponge we carry:
Natural + Sustainable Bath Sea Sponges {Caribbean}: Our original sponge and still our most popular, with over 160 five-star reviews. These are cut grass sponges, sustainably harvested from the Caribbean. They're soft, gentle, and have just the right amount of texture for effective daily exfoliation ~ not scratchy, not too mild. Available in Small/Medium, Large, X-Large, and XX-Large. These sponges are more economical and less durable than our premium sponges because they have been cut into their current shape and size. If you're looking for a natural and sustainable sponge that is affordable, this is a good one to start with. It's affordable, reliable, and gives you a genuine sense of what a good natural sponge feels like before deciding if you want to go further.
"Just dense enough to be a great exfoliator but also soft enough for general cleansing."

"Soft while having enough texture for exfoliation ~ return buyer!"
~ SuperKari, verified buyer

Unbleached "Chocolate" Bath Sea Sponges {Caribbean}:

Premium Whole Bath Sea Sponges {Gulf of Mexico}

One of our top recommendations. Whole-form sponges from the Gulf of Mexico ~ which means you get the benefits of both whole-form construction (denser, more durable) and Gulf of Mexico quality (superior fiber to Caribbean sponges). These are big, satisfying sponges with a classic golden color. They are also more exfoliating and "harder" than our Caribbean and Wool options. If you want a premium sponge that will be durable, exfoliating, and isn't our most expensive option, this is what we'd recommend.
"Big and dense. Also very gentle on my skin. I always buy my sponges from Fawn Lily. Very high quality."
~ Whitney I., verified buyer
Unbleached Premium Bath Sea Sponges - Natural + Sustainable {Gulf of Mexico}: Our personal favorite sponge! These are whole-form, unbleached, Gulf of Mexico sponges ~ which means they combine every quality marker we look for: whole-form construction, Gulf of Mexico fiber density, and the added durability and naturalness of being unbleached.
The result is a deep chocolate-brown sponge of extraordinary quality that you won't easily find anywhere else, because we custom order these from our harvester. If you want the most natural, most durable, highest quality sponge we carry, this is it.

~ David P., verified buyer

~ Richard W., verified buyer
Premium Deep Sea Wool Bath Sea Sponges: The softest sponges! If you prefer a very soft sponge over a more exfoliating sponge, then these are the perfect choice. Wool sponges are highly prized and widely considered to be the ultimate sponges for bathing. They are softer than other sponges (like "freshly spun wool"), denser, and usually more durable. They are gentle enough to be used in the bath or shower daily by all skin types, and they are delicate enough for children and babies. The wool sponges that we offer are of the highest quality, sustainably harvested from deep ocean depths (deeper ocean depths results in stronger, more durable, and higher quality sponges than those harvested in shallow waters). When compared to regular wool sponges, these are approximately 30% more durable. These are the perfect choice for anyone looking for a very soft and luxurious sponge!
"I love this sponge! It is super soft ~ so soft that I am using part of it to cleanse my face. The sponges also allow me to use less product."
~ Dianah J., verified buyer
"Wool for body, silk for face. The antimicrobial nature of sea sponges keeps them from souring."
~ Irma N., verified buyer
Silk Bath Sea Sponge

Silk sponges are a unique type of sea sponge with an exceptionally fine, dense fiber ~ softer than a grass sponge and closer in feel to wool, but with their own distinct silky quality. They exfoliate gently without any scratchiness, lather well from a small amount of product, and are a wonderful everyday sponge for anyone who wants something truly soft and refined. A good choice for mature or sensitive skin, and lovely as a gift.
"Exfoliates gently, leaving me feeling clean but not scraped clean. As close to perfect as I can get."
~ Bruce S., verified buyer
"These are beautiful soft sponges ~ Irene has high quality and puts so much thought into her products."
~ Shareen, verified buyer
For little ones: We also carry a dedicated Baby + Children's Silk Bath Sea Sponge ~ the gentlest option in our entire line, sized specifically for babies and young children. If you're looking for a completely natural, plastic-free sponge for bath time, this is the one. It makes a wonderful baby shower gift too.
And a note on our facial sponges: We carry a full line of silk facial sea sponges ~ sourced from the Caribbean, Philippines, and Mediterranean ~ sized and textured specifically for face cleansing. If you're looking for a sponge for your facial care routine rather than your body, those are worth exploring separately.
Not a sea sponge at all ~ luffas are a type of gourd, which makes them 100% plant-based and vegan. The natural fibers are firm and exfoliating, making luffas a noticeably more vigorous scrub than any of our sea sponges. They're also more durable and longer lasting than sea sponges, and fully biodegradable.
Most luffas on the market are grown overseas and treated with pesticides. Ours are grown on small family farms without pesticides or herbicides, which makes them genuinely different from what you'll find elsewhere.
If you love a more thorough, stimulating exfoliation ~ or if you're looking for a plant-based, vegan alternative to sea sponges ~ luffas are a wonderful choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between cut and whole-form sea sponges?
Cut sponges have been hand-trimmed into a consistent shape and size, making them more affordable. Whole-form sponges are harvested with their natural ocean shape intact ~ they're denser, more durable, and visually more striking. Both work beautifully for bathing, but whole-form sponges tend to last longer because the natural fiber structure is fully preserved.
What is the difference between bleached and unbleached sea sponges?
Bleached sponges have been lightened to achieve the familiar pale golden color most people associate with sea sponges. Unbleached sponges retain their natural dark chocolate-brown color. Unbleached sponges are more durable and closer to the sponge's natural state ~ the bleaching process, while gentle, does affect fiber strength slightly over time. Both are completely safe to use.
Are wool sea sponges softer than grass sponges?
Yes, noticeably so. Wool sponges are harvested from deeper ocean waters, which produces a denser, silkier fiber. They have a distinctly different feel from grass sponges ~ softer and more plush, with less surface texture. They're the best choice for very sensitive or delicate skin, and gentle enough for babies.
Which sea sponge is the most durable?
Our Unbleached Premium Gulf of Mexico sponges are the most durable option we carry. They combine the density advantage of whole-form construction, the superior quality of Gulf of Mexico fibers, and the added fiber strength of being unbleached. With proper care, they outlast cut Caribbean sponges considerably.
What is the difference between a sea sponge and a luffa?
Sea sponges are ocean organisms ~ living marine animals that are sustainably harvested by hand. Luffas are a type of gourd ~ entirely plant-based and vegan. Sea sponges are softer and gentler on skin. Luffas are firmer and more exfoliating. Both are natural, biodegradable, and plastic-free. If you prefer vigorous exfoliation or need a vegan option, luffas are the better fit. If you prefer a softer, more luxurious bathing experience, sea sponges are the choice.
Are sea sponges good for sensitive skin?
Yes ~ particularly our Caribbean grass sponges and wool sponges, which are the gentlest options in the line. All of our sea sponges are naturally soft and non-abrasive, and can be used daily by all skin types including reactive and sensitive skin. Wool sponges are the gentlest of all and are even safe for babies.
Can I use a sea sponge to wash my face?
Some customers do use their bath sponges on their face, and our wool sponges are particularly suited to this since they're so soft. However, we also carry a dedicated line of silk facial sea sponges specifically sized and textured for facial use ~ those are worth exploring if you'd like a sponge designed specifically for face cleansing.
Please note that all sponges, regardless of quality and natural durability, must be handled with care and used properly. Sponges all have complex and delicate fibers, and they must be handled with care so that they are not ruined or compromised. Rinse completely after each use and air dry. Never twist or pull the sponge, and do not rub too vigorously on the skin. Gently squeeze the sponge to remove any excess water or soap, never wring or twist water and soap out. Twisting, pulling, or vigorously using the sponge will cause damage and tear the fibers, which will make the sponge fall apart. Using soaps with synthetic ingredients - including synthetic fragrances, colors, and sudsing agents - will also damage the sponge's fibers and cause them to weaken and break. After each use, allow sponge to dry completely. To shop all of our natural and sustainably harvested bath sea sponges (plus other eco-friendly bathing accessories), visit the line here.
