What Is a Hydrosol? + How to Use Floral Waters in Your Routine
The short version: A hydrosol (also called a floral water) is the gentle, aromatic water left behind when plants are steam-distilled. Our hydrosols are pure, organic, preservative-free, and one of the loveliest ways to hydrate and tone your skin without any harsh ingredients. Spritz one on after cleansing, before your serums and oils, or anytime you'd like a refreshing, hydrating mist through the day.
Hydrosols are one of my most treasured parts of a natural routine, and yet they're so often misunderstood, or skipped entirely because people aren't quite sure what they are or how to use them. However, once you begin using them, you'll quickly realize just how incredible and versatile they are.
What is a hydrosol?
A hydrosol is the pure, aromatic water that's created during the steam distillation of essential oils. They contain the beneficial properties, essence, and energy of the plants distilled.
So while essential oils capture the concentrated, oil-soluble compounds of a plant, hydrosols capture something different and just as special, the water-soluble compounds. This means hydrosols carry their own unique set of plant benefits that essential oils simply don't have.
And because they're so much gentler, hydrosols can be used directly on the skin (no dilution needed!), making them perfect for daily use, sensitive skin, and even little ones.
You'll also hear them called floral waters, flower waters, or hydrolats ~ all the same lovely thing. And because a true hydrosol is simply distilled plant water with nothing added, it's about as pure and gentle as skincare gets.
How is a hydrosol different from a toner?
This is such a good question, because the two get confused all the time! Many conventional toners are water with added ingredients ~ and historically, a lot of them contained alcohol, which can leave skin feeling tight and stripped. A true hydrosol, by contrast, is the distilled plant water itself, with no alcohol, no synthetic fragrance, and no preservatives.
So while a hydrosol can absolutely be used as your toning step, it's a gentler, more nourishing sort of tone ~ one that hydrates and soothes rather than strips. If your skin is sensitive or reactive, that difference is key.

They hydrate and refresh. A quick spritz brings instant moisture and a cooling, comforting freshness that skin adores.

How do you use a hydrosol?
As your toning step: after cleansing, spritz over your face (eyes closed!) or apply to a cotton pad. Then follow with your serum or oil while skin is still damp.
As a hydrating refresher: mist anytime through the day when your skin feels dry, warm, or tired ~ over makeup is perfectly fine too.
To set your routine: a light spritz after your balm gives a soft, dewy finish.
Before your moisturizer: that trick of misting onto damp skin right before a balm helps everything melt in and locks in real moisture.
Which hydrosol should you choose?
It comes down to what your skin loves and which aromas you enjoy ~ each of ours has its own gentle character. Here are our organic hydrosols and where each one shines:
Bulgarian Rose ~ soft, romantic, and beloved for nearly every skin type; a wonderful all-purpose choice. This is a beautiful flower hydrosol, expertly distilled from certified organic Rosa damascena ~ the legendary Damask rose of Bulgaria's Rose Valley, where the finest roses in the world have been grown and celebrated for centuries. Cosmetically, this rose flower water is refreshing, purifying, cleansing, balancing, revitalizing, soothing, and toning.wonderful for mature or dehydrated skin.
Calendula Flower ~ gentle and comforting, perfect for sensitive or easily bothered skin. Naturally contains calming, soothing, rejuvenating, regenerative, balancing, cleansing, nourishing, purifying, and skin-toning properties and has a long history of use for a wide variety of skin concerns, irritations, discomforts, and acute skin issues. Calendula produces almost no essential oil during distillation, which means this hydrosol is actually the most complete and authentic way to experience this plant's chemistry. It's wonderfully comforting for sensitive, irritated, or barrier-compromised skin, and it's especially lovely if you're navigating the dryness and sensitivity that can come with perimenopause or menopause. Gentle enough for all ages and skin types.
Cornflower ~ light, soothing, and especially nice around the delicate eye area. A gentle, delicate, calming, soothing, refreshing flower hydrosol ~ and one of the most useful hydrosols in our entire collection. Balances all skin types, and especially helpful for sensitive, reactive, delicate, and barrier-compromised skin. Our go-to for sensitive skin and tired, puffy eyes.
Neroli (Orange Blossom) ~ The intoxicating scent of fresh neroli blossoms, with toning, refreshing, cleansing, and balancing properties. The scent is beautiful, uplifting, joyful. Beneficial for all skin types - especially oily, combination, and mature skin.
Frankincense Resin ~ grounding and resinous, a favorite for mature and changing skin. Distilled from real Boswellia carterii resin, this hydrosol is deeply grounding with firming, purifying, regenerating, revitalizing, calming, cleansing, and toning properties. A favorite for mature and aging skin.
Helichrysum (Immortelle) ~ Our most potent anti-aging hydrosol, treasured for supporting skin's firmness over time. Helichrysum possesses remarkable regenerating, anti-aging, and skin-renewing properties, and is revered by those with mature, aging, and barrier-compromised skin. A little note on its aroma: helichrysum has a distinctive, curry-like, herbaceous scent that surprises some people at first! That characteristic smell is actually a sign of a genuine, high-quality helichrysum, it shows that you're using a high quality and true helichrysum hydrosol ~ not a fake product (helichrysum is often adulterated). If the helichrysum that you've used in the past smelled sweet or flowery, then it was likely a synthetic fragrance or adulterated.
Not all hydrosols are created equal
Here's something important to know before you buy: not all hydrosols are the real thing. The word "hydrosol" (and "floral water," "flower water," or "hydrolat") isn't tightly regulated, so a few very different products end up sharing the name ~ and the quality varies enormously.
True hydrosols are made through steam or water distillation of whole plants, capturing the water-soluble compounds anda fine suspension of the plant's aromatic molecules. This is the real, therapeutic thing.
Fake hydrosols are simply essential oil mixed into water with a solubilizer (a kind of surfactant to keep the oil dispersed). These aren't distilled at all ~ they're a shortcut. A quick way to spot one: give the bottle a shake. If it foams or lathers, that's the solubilizer, and it isn't a true hydrosol. A real one won't foam.
Byproduct hydrosols are the leftover water from distillations where the goal was to extract essential oil, not hydrosol. The hydrosol is an afterthought, so it's often weaker and less carefully made than a hydrosol distilled as the main event.
And some have preservatives or additives mixed in, which can irritate sensitive skin ~ the very skin hydrosols are often reached for to soothe.
